A pretty standard definition of “demography” is the study of populations. This includes population movement (migration - both internal and external), and characteristics of the population (e.g., age, race, sex, ethnicity, and marital status). It also includes the analyses of the components of natural change (births and deaths or vital statistics). Demographic analysis involves the examination of data from censuses, surveys, and administrative records in order to explain trends in the population of a particular area. Below are some examples of the demographic analysis performed by Sabre Systems, Inc.
Immigration Studies: After the events of September 11, 2001,
the study of immigration to the United States has generated
significantly more interest than would have been the case had this
tragedy not happened. Sabre Systems is extremely proud of
the important role it played in assisting in a number of important
immigration studies. These studies have included some of the
following:
Settlement patterns of the foreign-born population immigrating to the United States by country of origin and place of current residence by number of years at that residence.
Examination of available data and developing algorithms of the legal non-immigrant population.
Country of national origin and the geographic distribution in the United States of the Hispanic populations from Central and South America.
The impact of immigrants from the Caribbean nations and islands, especially to New York and Florida.
The size of the emigrant population from the United States and the country of destination.
Historical changes in the Hispanic population in the United States using annual survey results.
Gross migration flows of Mexican citizens into and out of the United States.
Analyses of the characteristics of Asians and Pacific Islanders by socioeconomic characteristics and over time based on surveys and censuses.
Analysis of the pattern of reporting identity by the foreign-born population in the United States.
Other demographic analyses: The analyses discussed above involving immigration from abroad all have a common thread. Other demographic studies
undertaken by Sabre Systems, Inc. involved disparate topics that can be loosely included under this category. Some of these other demographic analyses
are listed below. Wherever possible, the projects have been grouped where they cover essentially the same topic or utilize similar methods of analysis.
These studies included:
Racial and ethnic diversity among older Americans.
Fertility rate analysis and projection methodology review for low fertility countries including those in Central and Eastern Europe and those in the former Soviet Union.
Evaluation of the characteristics of Native Hawaiians
based on census and survey results.
Analyses of racial statistics from censuses and surveys
with special emphasis on the Asian and Pacific Islander
and African American populations.
Development of publication standards for the presentation of data on internal United States migration and the application of findings to the rewording of survey questions on this topic.
Analyses of aging and gender for the United States and countries throughout the world and comparisons across national boundries.
The results of some of this work will appear in the Whitepapers section of this website.
